Humbrol's No. I II Uniform Grey was mixed with varying amounts of olive green, black and khaki drill and then drybrushed onto the figures allowing the black base to act as a preshadow. After the buildings and other accessories to be used for the scene are constructed, they should be painted and weathered using similar methods to those for AFV models. It is important to note that concrete is a tan colour and not grey. Building bricks look best if some of the individual ones are picked out in a different hue than the overall dark reddish brown, and adding the light-coloured mortar between them adds an element of realism. Rural dioramas A diorama in a rural setting is generally simpler to complete than an urban one.

Pastel chalk and earth-coloured pigment were brushed onto the model's exterior in a streaked fashion, emphasizing the dirt buildup that was typical of these vehicles in heavy service. Localized washes of thinned, black oil paint were repeated in some spots on top of the dusty exterior to show stains from oil, grease and grime. Demonstrating the technique on the Char BI bis model, this was done one section at a time, and the paint was specifically applied to the nooks, crannies and engraved detail of the model typically thinned down with mineral spirits and added with a fine-tipped brush to a pre-soaked surface, which allows the paint to be 'wicked' into the cracks and crevices of the model.
